Maternal-fetal Medicine Services

A Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist (Perinatologist) is a trained obstetrician/gynecologist who has 3 years of additional formal training and specialized interest and experience taking care of women with complicated pregnancies and their unborn babies.
Having a healthy pregnancy starts before you conceive with preconception counseling. Maternal Fetal Medicine physicians offer preconception counseling, fertility treatment, as well as high-risk pregnancy care for women with medical conditions or risk factors that can affect pregnancy. They provide genetic counseling.

Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) physicians are experts at performing and interpreting ultrasound examinations. MFMs help manage a mother’s existing health problems, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. They care for women who develop complications during pregnancy or childbirth.

In addition to many fetal therapy and prenatal diagnosis procedures (which includes everything from ultrasounds to fetal blood transfusions and more), a maternal fetal specialist performs a number of operating room and in-patient procedures.

On a given day, Dr. Fausett (or another MFM) may perform:

  • Cesarean delivery
  • Vaginal delivery (including VBAC)
  • Cervical cerclage
  • Dilation and evacuation after miscarriage
  • Postpartum salpingectomy or tubal ligation (after cesarean)
  • External cephalic version
  • Amniocentesis
  • Amnioreduction

These procedures have various indications and can be planned or unplanned. Having the skill set to perform these types of procedures helps Dr. Fausett (and all MFM specialists) give the most comprehensive, well-rounded, and continuous care to high-risk patients.
